There should be no homogeneous direction or objective, but the formation
of different constellations of spontaneous and unexpected relationships
influenced by proximity questions and catalyzed by the common activities and
lectures offered afterhours. The concept for the design comes as a natural consequence
of thinking how a CoWorking space works. Individuals with different activities
and interests sitting side by side create the possibility for interactions
other than those expected at standard ?one-profession-only? spaces.
Physically,
the space that would be necessary for the
CoWorking to function as a simple working place would be a warehouse
with sufficient space for work desks. On one side this configuration has
positive aspects: the notion of spatial unity, the feeling of equality between
workers, ease of communication etc. On the other side, the sameness and the
lack of differentiation can create a negative and unexciting atmosphere.
We tried
to preserve the sensation of unity and keep as much of the original walls and
infrastructure possible, while still creating situations of spatial
specificity. These specificities are not closed in themselves, they are
flexible and connected cadencially. The variation/movement of an element in a certain
place, be it lighting, surface or layout, affects connected spaces as links in
a chain. In this manner continuity is not total but arranged by different uses
during the day. This is represented in the design by the digitally fabricated
parametric bookshelf that adapts itself to singular uses and connects the
workspaces where dismountable tables configure different interpersonal
relations, while the limits of the reunions area can disappear by simply moving
curtains revealing a new dimension to the existing space.
