STATUS
Built
YEAR
2014
Albertine Books in French and English, a reading room and bookshop housed in
the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, breathes new life into the Payne Whitney House at 972 Fifth Avenue even as it sustains an important legacy of Old New York. Working in concert with the celebrated interior designer Jacques Garcia, Jeffrey Berman Architect planned a phased renovation that created the space for Albertine and that will ultimately bring the building into conformance with current codes.

What makes the renovation unique is that it not only maintains the landmark features of the house but also preserves—and indeed advances—the spirit of the intellectual and aesthetic synthesis between French and American thought that inspired its original construction.
