A strong sculptural form with a unique identity, Albert Tower is a 27 storey residential tower containing 157 apartments. Inspired by its proximity to Melbourne?s Botanic Gardens the building is cloaked in a hexagonal exoskeleton, the language of which references the cellular structure of plants.
Albert Tower has been designed to find a place both within the larger scale of the whole city and also at a more local streetscape level. When seen from a distance the clarity of the exoskeleton generates a singular expression, reinforcing a simple understanding of the complete form.
On approach a second and tertiary hierarchy of smaller scale elements is revealed clearly identifying Albert Tower as a residential building with a distinctly human scale. An extension of the exoskeleton to the ground anchors the building to its context, whilst providing dramatic expression to the entrance.
A consistent and detailed approach to the interior design language is found throughout the common areas and apartments which are organised to maximise the excellent aspect afforded by the site. Extensive resident?s facilities occupy the upper level. Designed to cater for a variety of needs these facilities will be instrumental in generating a sense of community often missing in high-rise residential buildings.
To achieve an atypical solution, a thorough understanding of the building cost and project feasibility dynamics was essential. Working within the normal parameters of a commercial development project, the building demonstrates that it is possible to design and deliver solutions that are contextual, innovative and relevant to the city?s evolution.
As well as providing its residents with a beautiful place to live the building makes a positive contribution to the public realm, whether that be to the city as a whole or upon more immediate contact.
