Framing Stanley Park on one side and downtown on the other, the Alberni Street flat by Falken Reynolds provides a bi-coastal banker respite from Hong Kong’s frenzy and a pristine backdrop for his unique art collection.
The two bathrooms in the 1,200-square-foot flat were wholly renovated, and include clever details. In the master, a lighting fixture above the vanity blends seamlessly with a clerestory window into the bedroom, and a fogless shaving mirror extends the length of the room and into the shower to streamline the morning routine.
The client loves city life and modern architecture—as evidenced by his array of miniature buildings—but chose Vancouver as his other port of call for its green space. When he wants to bring nature to the fore, horizontal blinds on the east side allow him to conceal the more urban landscape; lines that are cleverly echoed in the adjacent corrugated Shanty cabinet by BD Barcelona. A predominately white palette also maintains focus on the view, and a vibrant art collection which includes works by Renaud Marion, Jiang Pengyi and Cédric Delsaux, as well as one of the client’s own photographs, inspired by Fred Herzog.
Akin to Delsaux’s Star Wars-inspired work, “The Buick,” the flat has a futuristic feel, albeit light-handedly and rooted in the now. In addition to sharp angles, sculptural shapes are subtly repeated in the space, as seen in the Dodo armchair by Cassina (the client’s own, recovered in white leather), circular rug designed by Falken Reynolds from Finlay & Kath and Halo table lamp designed by Karim Rashid for Artemide, along with other lighting throughout.
