The reconstruction of the Alafuzov Factory is a large-scale project engaging with the history of the Volga segment of the Great Silk Road, the surrounding landscape, and the memory of the place. The 7-hectare site lies on a complex terrain near the banks of the Kazanka River and includes buildings from different periods — from industrial heritage structures to later additions.
Through work with urban and national identity, combined with careful sociocultural programming, the currently fragmented territory is reassembled into a coherent piece of the city’s fabric. Key tools of transformation include the creation of new viewpoints, the opening of the relief toward the river, and the development of a new toponymy for the site.
