The Lebanese restaurant Al Sultan located in the very heart of Mayfair, which has been catering to London's elite for over 30 years, underwent a complete re-design and re-build and once again opened its doors in July 2015.
The main goal of IDEA design concept is to amalgamate traditional Islamic patterns and decorations, with a contemporary European aesthetic to achieve a more approachable and modern setting that is in sync with our times. The venue's sedate and almost monochromatic colour palette sets a tone of elegance while at the same time the warmth of the aluminium brass coloured latticed grill which lines the walls subtle reference to middle eastern opulence.
The grill, a key feature of the design, a traditional Islamic pattern was re-designed by us to give it a softer, more contemporary feel. The bespoke laser cut aluminium panels were powder coated in golden tones lit both from the front and back to give the otherwise tight space the illusion of volume. The latticed grill wraps itself around the soft pebble-like shape of the pure white lacquered bar, and almost seems to weave itself around the whole restaurant.
A sextagonal pattern was chosen for the bespoke wenge and walnut sunburst parquetry reminiscent of traditional islamic ornamentation. A series of custom built ring chandeliers are arranged through out the space, their amber shimmer reflected in the venetian stucco on the ceiling. A lacquered sunburst walnut chef's table sits beneath the largest of chandeliers in the group. Hand woven Christian Fischbacher sheer drapes decorate the windows. The clean lines of the sofas and chairs are a deliberate artistic compliment to the detailed patterns on the walls and floor and were key in helping us to set the proper tone for the design narrative.
