Al Rajhi Bank vision for its new headquarters was to build a landmark, a state-of-the-art office tower and a symbol for both Al Rajhi brand as well as a modern Saudi Arabia. It called for a design with a clear sense of identity and focus which integrated with the urban fabric through a strong public realm and the offering of public amenities. The proposed design of the 203-metre-tall tower draws from the regional context by creating four monolithic piers or cores to shield the crystalline glass tower from the inclement weather. The cores house the services like lifts, toilets, MEP spaces and staircases while leaving the tower floor plate clear for open plan offices. While visually creating a strong landmark, the design makes a statement akin to entering a tall and narrow mountain pass to arrive at an oasis. The floor plate is structured to receive optimum natural light while shielding the heat through the vertical interplay of the solid core structures.
The rough and harsh landscape of the Arabian Peninsula has formed the inspiration for the architecture. The base of the tower, with an exaggerated twisting face, resembles the opening of a gorge, providing access to an oasis, represented by the lobby floating on a water body. The unique setting of mountains, wadis and deserts with isolated oases have been brought together through abstract interpretation. As a landmark the architectural language had to inspire and communicate the iconic values of the building. The glass cube forms a flexible floor plan, allowing maximum flexibility. The cube is envisaged as a clear and transparent working environment that provides paramount views of Riyadh.
