When Airbnb Open LA brought thousands of hosts to downtown Los Angeles this November, we were honored to design one of the highlights: an installation devoted to transformative travel experiences. Taking over the 4,000-sq. ft. BNKR flagship store, a street-level storefront in a 99-year-old Beaux Arts building, we developed vignettes reflecting words in various languages that Airbnb guests have used to describe their stays around the world. Unexpected elements—some found, some repurposed, some custom-built—contributed to a playful atmosphere. Hosts were invited to write their own stories, share them in audio or video interviews or typewritten haikus, and create visual works with our new favorite artist, Anne-Louise Ewen. It felt like we were creating a place where we would want to be.
