This year's Airbnb Haus was the result of a highly collaborative team assembled by Airbnb that included the design firm WOW Atelier and Civic Entertainment Group. The concept was simple: “Local Characters Live Here.” The Haus was a vessel for storytelling and celebrating local characters; not just a place to relax, but a place for festival goers to come and actively participate, enjoy, and share their own stories.
As in years past, the Airbnb Haus was a cozy, welcoming respite in the bustling Sundance scene- a place where everyone could belong. The Salt Lake City based design firm WOW Atelier was tasked to create light, open warm inviting spaces that felt like home, but at the same time allow festival goers the chance to engage in the environment in a way that was genuine and allowed everyone the chance to impact the space, and become an active participant.
WOW Atelier’s minimalistic yet cozy design allowed for a suite of engaging installations, ranging from selfie beds to across-the-globe, live stream conversations. Adobe ‘Pillow talk’ that allowed guests to dream a little, share their stories in bed, have their photo taken, while the master technicians from Adobe helped them turn their ideas into digital graphic cards that could be shared via social media of choice. The immersive installation by London artist Brendan Dawes, ‘Local Murmurs’, featured twelve exquisite little printers fabricated just for this event that allowed people from around the world text in stories for guests in the Airbnb haus to read, pull them from the printer and hang them up. Brendan and WOW collaborated on how the tickets would hang in the space, the result was what resembled a Japanese prayer tree, where every ticket and every story was hung to create an immersive environment to walk through that represented people from all over the World. Shared Studios ‘Portals’ project allowed guest to enter an intimate room and to talk to people thousands of miles away, from Cuba, Mexico, and Iran. Lastly was the content that was generated by the Airbnb community. A small gallery called ‘The Cast of local Characters’ that took the incredible stories submitted online from Airbnb’s blog to the real material world through the lense of the talented design team in house at Airbnb. Who created graphics to go with each story. The result was an amazing gallery based on local characters from all over the world.
While this year's Airbnb Haus offered a reprieve from the busy Sundance scene by creating a space that was perfect for finding a quiet nook, sipping a cup of joe, or just chilling with friends and family and talking about all the great films. It was also offered an experience that captured the heart of Sundance, one that resembles the magic of a film, where you walk into a room, and two hours later you emerge with a new perspective on life. Each festival goer that came to the the Airbnb Haus this year had the chance to be touched by someone else in the world, and hopefully their stories offered fresh perspectives for everyone that engaged with them.
