The new Air Force Village Spiritual Center is designed as a
formation of diamond-shaped skylight volumes. The overall diamond shaped building perimeter binds the skylights together into a singular whole at ground level,
but allows them to emerge as independent volumes at the roof, analogous to a
squadron or fleet, referencing the five branches of the military that the
Air
Force Villages serve -- Air Force, Army, Navy, Marines and Coast
Guard. These five smaller skylights are clustered around a larger volume
that is the Sanctuary. The multi-denominational nature of the spiritual
center is also represented by the separate skylight volumes held together by
the pure overall building geometry, signifying the unity of faith.
The building alights on the arc-shaped site, creating
a striking presence from the new entry road. The building’s geometry
aligns with the existing Health Center and reflects the strong East-West
axis of the Air Force Village master plan. The forty five degree angle in
plan mediates between this predominant E-W axis and the orientation of
the new entry road. Inside, the diamond shaped spaces form the Sanctuary,
Blessed Sacrament, and Multi-faith worship space. These sacred spaces, as
well as the administrative area are clustered around the centrally located Narthex. Each of these major programmatic areas is lit from above, yet connected horizontally by
oblique views.
The connection to the existing Healthcare Center is made via a
sun-filled internal passage that connects the Narthex to the existing octagonal interior court. The exterior of the Air Force Village Spiritual
Center is clad in aluminum panels that not only recall the metal roofs that characterize the vernacular buildings of the region, but also
reference the Air Force Academy Chapel in Colorado. The diamond shaped panels
are combined with glass at the sanctuary to create a crystalline façade.
For the interior, the sacred and public spaces are partially lined with
wood. In particular, the Sanctuary ceiling is designed as a luminous hypar-gridshell that carries the view upward to the skylight while lighting the space in an ambient glow.
