The main goal of this project proposal is to show sympathy for the AIDS tragedy in New York. The tragedy is an integral part of the city's history, its past and future, too. The concept is to createan interactive space where visitors can become familiarized with the AIDS crisis and its human dimensions. At the centre of the memorial complex we have planned an atrium, a rotunda, that will serve asan interactive sacred space where one can symphathize with the loss of thousands of lives fallen victim to the disease. The atrium wall is made from thousands of stone pieces, each one a symbol of the many peoplewho suffered from this illness. The wall has many holes and open spots; it is the place where the tragedy of the past and the hope for the future meet - a borderline. Here everyone can express theirempathy, light a candle and place it there as an act of sympathy and hope. The park perimeter walls are made of stone, with a brick tiling which corresponds to the surrounding green area and reminds us of the former building at the same place At theground level the complex is formed as a park space with three entrances, one at each corner of thesite. The corners of the triangle act as three crossroads and we chose them as the most natural andconvenient entrances towards the terrain of the AIDS Memorial Park. The main entrance leads tothe meeting point of Greenwich Avenue and West 12th. Considering the fact that the distance fromthere to the other side of the site is the longest possible, we decided this would be the mostappropriate entrance as it would give visitors the opportunity to see the park in a deep perspectivefrom its start. Here we envision access to the underground level of the memorial. Such access isprovided also in the central part through a ramp surrounding the memorial. The spiral ramp slowlyushers the visitor into the memorial's atmosphere. It also provides access for handicapped peopleto the underground part where the AIDS education center and the AIDS digital exhibition are situated. The existing columns on the underground level will all remain except two because of theatrium. In the central part there will be a sectored table chart which will direct visitors inside the memorial. In the main part the initials of the victims, as well as their year of birth and death, will be writtendown on the stone pieces.Day light reaches the underground level through cylindrical openings
