This building is an obstetrics and gynecology clinic in Okinawa, Japan.
The characteristic facade is composed by Hana-blocks. Hana-block (perforated concrete block) has not been used so much recently since it’s recognized as old fashioned. However, It has been traditional material in Okinawa for long time. Furthermore, it is suitable to the local climate and able to protect building from typhoon and strong solar radiation while providing a soft sunlight, ventilation and privacy. Therefore, we designed original Hana-block aiming to make new aesthetic value and also to become acclimated to Okinawa.
On the other hand, we designed rigid structural frame shaped like Torii. Torii is Shinto shrine gate. Its shape has efficient structural strength and flexibility. The space was high openness by combination of rigid reinforced concrete frame and slender steel columns that support cantilevered slabs of east and west side. In addition, beams and columns became slender as they became upper floor. As described in a diagram, interior walls are dry construction method and beams have certain numbers of sleeves beforehand. So it is economical and increasing the flexibility in planning.
In these days, most of buildings in Okinawa are reinforced concrete structure because it has frequently encountered typhoon and salt-air damage. So construction companies in Okinawa have good technique for it. However, this project had very limited period of construction. In order to shorten the time for construction, we minimized to apply reinforced concrete for only Trii structural frame. In addition, mold, reinforcing bar, and separator were manufactured at the factory, and mold are reformed and reused at the upper level for the cost cut and the environmental consideration. As a result, it became possible to advance the different construction phase at the each level of three stories and six stories building had completed in 8 month including pilling work even though typhoon had hit this site 10 times while construction.
Okinawa has high birth rate in Japan, but same time has serious problem of child neglect or abuse. So obstetrics and gynecology clinic should need a role as comprehensive care institution. The client’s motto is “the happiness of mother brings the happiness of family”. Based on this motto, we designed this clinic by creating traditional warming space and modern efficiency at the same time, so that woman can face childbirth and illness in homey atmosphere.
