A.house is
located in a dense residential area in Tokyo facing a street. The client was a
jewelry designer, who wished to have an open gallery space and a private living
space in the same house.
The house
consists out of 3 main volumes stacked vertically above each other, containing
the Gallery and a bathroom on the ground floor, living, dining and kitchen on
the 1st floor, and a bedroom on the 2nd floor.
In order to gain
privacy and sunlight within the strict height and set back regulations the 3
volumes were slightly shifted to each other and get from floor to floor
smaller. The shifted volumes create slit openings on the ceiling on each floor
below and bring top light and a view to the sky.
The wooden structure reinforced by steel beams made
the slit opening on the ceiling possible and kept the construction to low cost.
