This project involves marking the various stages of the building's intervention, and this proposal is one of those chapters of urban metamorphosis and reconfiguration.
The goal is to highlight the different periods of the building: from the original construction that reflects an industrial structure on floors 0 and 1; the expansion in 1912, which included the second floor and the central tower on the east facade; and the new contemporary intervention concerning the mansard floor and the metallic volume. It is a dialogue that is not new: between pre-existence and contemporary proposal.
A series of changes were made, with a particular focus on accessibility and functional reorganization of the units, adjusting them to current needs and requirements. This will significantly improve the conditions of hygiene, accessibility, habitability, and safety in each unit. Additionally, it aims to enhance the structural performance of the building, ensuring necessary earthquake resistance, currently non-existent.
In this sense, materials and languages were chosen to correspond to the intention of marking eras and distinguishing interventions: for the 'old' building, materials and elements reminiscent of the original era were selected, such as decorative baseboards, embossed shutters, moldings, etc. For the new building, differentiation is achieved with a metallic 'skin' that envelops the exterior volume, and internally, contemporary spaces with minimalist details were created.
