The former Sümerbank Kayseri Textile Factory Complex (I. Nikolaev and Turkstroj, 1932-1935), abandoned due to privatization policies in 1999 and listed in the national inventories since 2002, was allocated to Abdullah Gül University, a new institution of higher education, in 2012. In order to transform the site to a university campus, AGU created a new initiative with the aim of preserving the original characteristics of the buildings and their layout while making their reuse possible. The master plan focusing on creating an open city campus that will become the interface between the academia and students and the citizens of Kayseri, in accordance with the education, research and societal service mission of the institution, designed by Burak Asiliskender, Nilüfer Baturayoğlu Yöney and Özlem Kevseroğlu Durmuş (for the AGU School of Architecture, was completed and ratified in 2014. The master plan aims to define dominant function zones although administrative, educational and socio-cultural functions need to be integrated into all of the zones while re-using the existing and producing new social, cultural and recreational spaces. Once an urban center, the campus is now being regenerated as a new urban hub, preserving it as a memory place.
