An art and design professor
commissioned this design of a storage unit for her vast collection of art and
design books. Her requirements
were twofold: that her books be hidden during non-work hours and that the
storage solution enliven her otherwise mundane loft. Our solution is based on advent, the physical record-keeping of progress. The
storage unit is composed of 24 closed storage bays concealed behind a surface
of multi-colored doors. Functionally, an opened door falls exactly against its
companion, allowing access to the books behind. As the client retrieves books
over the course of her work day, the opening of doors within the storage unit
becomes the advent of her work.
This is reflected not only in the transformation of bays from surface to
volume but in the shifting of colors as doors relocate.
