To continue its work to enhance public engagement and advance the science of astronomy, the Adirondack Public Observatory reached out to ENVISION to help develop its future expansion. Already a great location for star gazing, the APO will expand to offer a state-of-the-art research telescope and a public-facing Astro-Science Center featuring an observatory, classrooms, exhibit space, and gift-shop. Helping to integrate with area schools, colleges and universities, the expansion will contribute to scientific discovery, and invite the public and students to explore the history, present and future of Astronomy thru exhibits, lectures, seminars, and hands-on activities.
The topography of the site, so critical for clear views of the sky, became one of the driving concepts for site planning. To allow clear 360 degree views of the night sky and meet Adirondack height requirements, we carefully considered roof slopes, viewing angles, and the massing of both the Research Telescope Building and the Astro-Science Center, all while designing a modern Adirondack-style building of simple, compelling, sustainable materials. To incorporate accessibility and enhance the experience for group tours, the site design features a landscaped ramp up to the research telescope as well as a covered drop-off and bus parking.
Working with an award-winning exhibit design team, we collaboratively addressed the Astro-Science Center program to create inspiring interior spaces that encourage exploration and hands-on learning. A double-height exhibition hall features suspended sculptural elements, exhibit cases containing historic astronomy instruments, touch screens and a video alcove. The 40+ seat observatory completes the public program.
