Set within the Vilariça Valley in Portugal’s Douro Superior, the Adega do Ataíde Winery rethinks the relationship between architecture, landscape, and wine production. Developed for Symington Family Estates, the project is conceived as an integrated system where environmental performance, functional efficiency, and territorial sensitivity are inseparable.
The building is embedded within the natural slope of the terrain, allowing it to minimize its visual presence in one of the world’s most historic and protected wine regions. Rather than establishing itself as a dominant object, the winery extends the surrounding landscape, reinforcing the continuity of vineyards and olive groves while benefiting from the thermal stability of the ground.
At the core of the project is a commitment to sustainability. Designed to achieve LEED v4 Gold certification, the winery operates as a positive-energy building, generating more electricity than it consumes through photovoltaic panels integrated into its perimeter structure. A continuous green roof, composed of native vegetation, enhances insulation, supports biodiversity, and further dissolves the building into its context.
The architecture is directly informed by the winemaking process. Taking advantage of the natural topography, the winery is organized as a gravity-fed system in which grapes are received at the upper level and move through successive stages of production without mechanical pumping. This approach reduces energy use while preserving the integrity of the fruit, aligning spatial organization with production logic.
Environmental strategies extend beyond energy performance. Water is treated and reused on site, contributing to irrigation and reducing overall consumption, while the landscape is designed to retain and manage rainwater naturally. The project also incorporates research into the capture and reuse of carbon dioxide released during fermentation, introducing a circular dimension to the production cycle.
Materially, the building relies primarily on reinforced concrete, providing the structural capacity required for large production spaces while contributing to thermal inertia and durability. Its restrained architectural language, defined by horizontal lines and controlled volumetry, reflects a balance between technical requirements and a sensitive response to place.
The Adega do Ataíde Winery proposes a model for contemporary winery architecture in which building, landscape, and process operate as a unified whole. By integrating sustainability at every level — from energy and water to production and materiality, it demonstrates how architecture can enhance both environmental performance and the cultural continuity of the Douro region.
