This is the “new office + show room” project for a company of “car dealer + repair shop”.It is situated on narrow but busy street-side in the suburbs of Tokushima. So, this Architecture has to have strong presence to attract attention of drivers passing by.
Big canopy was scaled and designed to let large sized cars under on rainy day, such as big trailer with gull wing doors, heavy duty truck, highway bus. The rounded shape of the canopy is a quotation of a Greek myth Hero “Achilleus’s battle helmet. Roof line goes in the air to be connected with a rounded wall standing on the border. The completed line shows invisual elevation of this project.
Depth of transoms of the curtain wall on road side (mainly) was considered as sun shade on the winter solstice, a day of the lowest solar altitude.
Client wanted to use Black and White and Red color. So I painted exterior wall Black and White, and waiting room Red. Waiting room is arranged for visitors, as waiting room for repairing of their cars, and for negotiations. It has to be unusual space because buying car is a kind of special moment for us. Mono colored (red though) space may calm visitors...
Now, Achilleus is a symbol of this town.
