Classic, ethnic and minimalistic
pieces are merged together inside a cauldron of maximalistic humour in this
lavish apartment designed by Studio Guilherme Torres in Londrina, Brazil. No, to conventional rules. Yes to the
funny Kitsch aesthetics. That was Guilherme Torres’s proposal to his friend and
client when she asked him to take over the decoration of her new apartment in
Londrina. The solution should’ve been temporary, since it’s a rented property.
Just slight adequacies were made, like the demolition of the old plaster
wallboards, wall leveling, illumination and floor material and painting. Due to
her work as a candy designer, the dweller is constantly visited by her clients
for tasting. The decoration was therefore thought to escape common sense, and
the result is a whole mix of pop references with other more sophisticated
choices. The furniture follows a more contemporary style in its simple lines,
so it doesn’t compete with the decoration. In fearless exaggeration, the
combination of design pieces, as the bubblegum pinky Panton chairs with other
classics, like the silver chandeliers and murano vases, find a break-even point
that provides the different spices to the apartment.
The decoration’s Kitsch core shows
up in the smallest details, whether on the Wonder Woman posters placed over the
colored cup collection, or in the Murano vases scattered all over, or in the
zebra carpet, a gift from the client’s mother brought from a safari trip. In
the bedroom, a panel covered in Chinese fabric takes the place of the headrest
on the bed and next to thrift store lamps.
