Aberdeen Dragons connects two large public buildings at the Aberdeen Centre with a temporary connective pathway experience. The design concept derived from classical Chinese drawings of dragons – we sought to represent two playful dragons weaving through the linear space. The wood slat dragons rise and fall, twist and turn while providing play areas, niches, and a colourful, active space for kids of all ages.
The dragons are designed in sections, to be removed and donated to schools in the area as future play structures, giving the design a longer life than the owner originally requested. The ability for the project to find a broader story, one that connected to the cultural identity of the Chinese Canadian community and brought greater value to our solution.
