ABA’s NYC Office was designed as an aediculated space, or room within a room, optimizing the surrounding walls for art display. The office was built very quickly, function predominately allowed to dictate form. The space had previously been used as a storage area and so contained several wood-shelving units. The wood was reclaimed and reconfigured to create “new” desks, storage, and worktables. This not only up-cycled the lumber but cut construction costs dramatically.
Inexpensive industrial strip lights and vintage fixtures were coupled with the raw lumber, stripping the overall design to a bare bones aesthetic. The design choices proved dramatic, creating a sophisticated look without pretense or use of flashy materials or products, allowing the articulation of forms and simple design ideas to take precedence.
