This was a commission for the Kiasma museum of contemporary art and part of a three-month exhibition called "At First We Take Museums". "Aalto" the size of the entire 5th floor was an interactive piece and the world's largest skatable sculpture. Viewers/users were invited to explore, transition, and move over and through the object either by foot or ideally with a skateboard. The ideology, sketching, model making, and rough curve calculations were made by Rich Holland, the construction drawings were made by architect Stephen Mitchel.
The form is created from the ideology of skateboarding beginnings, that being surfers adding rollerskate wheels onto surfboards and 'Sidewalk Surfing' the pavements, banks, and found urban environments in California. The standing wave creates a moment where current skateboarders can surf the form.
An additional concrete piece was situated outside of the gallery and was permanently installed, this was a new "moving unit", a concrete multi-functional piece of urban furniture.
