The AA315 single family house is located in the west of Mexico City and is part of a third generation of architectural interventions in a residential neighborhood created in the 1930s.
When the client acquired the plot , a house from the 50´s occupied the center of the site. After evaluating different scenarios the client decided to demolish the existing building and commission a new project.
After the demolition of the existing building, the 60 year old trees surrounding the previous house were revealed , dictating together with the orientation of the plot, the L-Shape of the project. At this stage we decided to exploit this condition and agreed with the client to design a house that could open and live as much as possible to the green exterior, aiming to create , in the words of our client, a garden with a house instead of a house with a garden.
The architectural brief is organized in three levels.
Level 1: Social areas at the ground level ( living room , dining room, family room, terrace, toilet , kitchen and lobby).
Level 2: Private areas on the 1st level ( Master Bedroom, Bedrooms, Guest Room, TV room)
Level -1: Services on the underground level ( Laundry room, garage, gym , technical areas)
As per our agreement with the client, all the programme in Level 1 is open to the garden. Only specific areas like the dining room , the family Room, the Kitchen that require a specific degree of privacy and containment are enclosed in volumes. The rest of the programme takes place on a concrete platform sitting gently on the grass. This platform serves as concourse, entrance lobby, living room and terrace where the space flows freely connecting the interior space with the garden.
The main stair of the house is located in the double height corner of the L-Shape serving as a connection between the social and private areas of the house.
The Level 2 takes advantage of the L-Shape to divide the private areas in 3 sections. The left wing is occupied by the Master Bedroom with the bath room and dressing room, the right with is occupied by the 2 bedrooms and the TV room and the corner of the L-Shape is occupied by the stair lobby and Guest Room.
This arrangement guaranteed the privacy of the bedrooms and created a meeting point for the family in the crossing of the 2 wings.
