Falling ash from Sakurajima Island, which is the symbol of this region, is a big concern for people who live here.
The clients requested us to design a house which would be able to protect them from harsh natural aspects such as falling ash, summer sunlight, and typhoons. The clients also wanted the space to have a calm and settled atmosphere with a dignified appearance and without a claustrophobic feel while securing privacy.
This house is composed of simple components such as a floor and hipped roof with long eaves. These compositions protect the clients’ life and the house itself from various natural conditions and also controls sunlight.
At the same time, the latticed doors and reed doors project light and shadow dynamically changing the lighting day by day, hour by hour. The house also has a strong steel frame construction.
The dignified space was further realized through a composition of proper lines and sensitive aspects, such as light and shade, juxtaposed with a strong but graceful construction of the steel frame.
