Where Fashion Meets Nature: A Nature-Inspired Fashion Home conceived by Ping Zhang of Shangceng Design
Pushing open the gate, rows of white hydrangeas bow their heads, their full blossoms drooping low enough to brush against one’s ankles. Walking further along the hydrangea path and turning inward, the view suddenly opens up—silver grass sways in the wind and unnamed wildflowers sprinkle the greenery, blooming sporadically at varying heights.
Ms. D’s home lies quietly nestled within the wild greenery of the suburbs, away from the bustle of Beijing. There’s no complicated ornamentation or intentional extravagance, but only a clean, living atmosphere. Much like the wild garden outdoors, it doesn’t strive to be picture-perfect like a magazine spread, but rather resembles a relaxed yet refined linen shirt: comfortable and fitting in every detail.
Not long before the photoshoot for this space, designer Zhang Ping had visited the Chelsea Flower Show in the UK and was deeply impressed. She remarked, “The British understanding of a garden is neither serious nor classical—it’s simply about presenting the relationship between people, the garden, and nature.” This resonated perfectly with the philosophy of the wilderness garden she designed for Ms. D earlier.
Living with Wilderness
Ms. D is the founder of a clothing brand, and the fast-paced changes in fashion trends have brought her significant work pressure. She originally lived in the center of Beijing but moved to the suburbs for her career. Although still in a transitional phase, she desired a high quality of life, so she purchased this 400㎡ villa with a yard.
Now, every morning, Ms. D puts on her own brand clothes and shoots a short video in the yard. She also enjoys talking to nature. She says that since moving in, the biggest change has been her growing belief that quality and minimalism, with the right colors, are the most appealing and timeless, just like the design of her home.
The designer aimed to strike a balance between minimalism and richness—eschewing complex lines while highlighting a life of abundance. Busy urbanites need healing, and in Ms. D’s home, this healing power comes from a love for life and a dialogue with nature.
Ms. D loves hydrangeas, and the courtyard is surrounded by white hydrangeas and low-lying, clustered herbaceous plants. Trees of varying heights blend seamlessly with the public greenery of the residential area, creating layers that extend the sightlines endlessly—blurring the boundaries of the garden.
A waist-high low wall outlines the activity area with clean lines, providing a sense of enclosure and security without obstructing the view. At the center of the courtyard, a zone of black gravel resembles an island embraced by untamed nature. After nightfall, a crackling fire burns in the cast-iron stove, its flames casting magnified shadows of surrounding plants onto the white walls of the villa: hydrangeas become swaying clouds of bloom, and silver grass transforms into dancing fingers. As the sparks gradually fade, moonlight reclaims the courtyard.
The yard is filled with the unrestrained growth of wilderness. There is no need to return to primitivism, nor to completely tame nature. At just the right distance, people and nature maintain their independence while existing in a soft, mutual embrace.
Growth in Nature
In the entrance hall, a rich spatial narrative unfolds. An opening in the floor slab creates an upward void, from the center of which a golden light fixture descends like a dandelion, stretching the space vertically. This area connects the dining room and the living room, with natural light flooding in from both sides, casting an ever-changing play of light and shadow.
A simple round table stands at the center of the space. On it, a plain white vase holds a touch of wild elegance—hydrangeas gathered from the garden, paired with rose hips bought from the flower market, their stems still glistening with morning dew. Everything here feels fresh and natural, carrying a vibrant, untamed spirit that fills the entire space with an upward tension.
Ms. D loves leaning back against the soft white sofa in the family room, flipping through a book or occasionally gazing at the view of the yard. With feet sunk into the plush rug, watching the silver grass sway gently in the wind, she often spots a black stray cat leaping into the yard for a stroll.
The spot with the best view on the ground floor was designed as a living room—no main light, no television, just a sofa set and two armchairs inviting people to relax and enjoy the greenery outside the window freely. The mirror wall expands the dimension of the space, reflecting the hydrangea bushes in the yard; reality and illusion intertwine, lending fluid layers to this otherwise compact room.
The space has gradually become what Ms. D always envisioned—not a show flat, but like a well-worn sweater that grows softer with time. Every impression left by movement quietly echoes her attitude toward home: a place she can settle into anytime, anywhere, offering a sense of belonging and inner peace.
Within this limited space, separate Chinese and Western-style kitchens were designed for the family. The kitchen island and dining table are all scaled to perfectly suit the homeowner’s daily use, allowing the sizzle of stir-frying and the relaxed atmosphere of afternoon tea to coexist without interference. Whether it’s breakfast at dawn or an afternoon tea break, the greenery outside the window never fails to lift one’s spirits.
A Secret Garden
In a two-square-meter basement light well, the designer has created a "secret garden," transforming the originally cramped space into a vertical micro-garden through the clever use of mirrors and light. Mirrors envelop the walls, reflecting countless layers of overlapping greenery, blurring the line between where the real plants end and the illusory reflections begin.
If the upper floor embodies the morning dew, then this space is the night breeze. The designer aimed to create a place for family and friends to gather—a space where alcohol, laughter, and the cheers of a ball game ferment together. Like a kaleidoscope, it refracts the many facets of life.
In contrast to the restrained color palette upstairs, the basement embraces an intense and richly layered lifestyle. The geometric marble marquetry floor sets a relaxed tone, while the deep olive-green velvet sofa invites effortless lounging. A sleek armchair—where leather meets brass—is placed beneath the window, set against a vibrantly colored art piece on the wall behind.
A wooden ceiling fan turns slowly overhead, stirring a gentle breeze; flames dance in the fireplace, casting a warm glow throughout the space. The harmonious blend of a bar, an art gallery, and a botanical garden lends these evening drinking moments an air of ease. Every seemingly casual design detail contributes to those rare, breathable moments between people and space.
A Body’s Retreat
The private bedrooms are located on the upper two levels, where the designer incorporated living rooms on each floor. The first floor houses the bedrooms of the male homeowner and the son. An open study is adjacent to the double-height space and connects visually with the ground floor, creating a world of his own.
He enjoys writing here. Seated at the desk by the window, he opens it to let the scent of plants and trees waft in from the courtyard.
The soft texture of the beige wool carpet feels as soft as fresh snow underfoot. Black-and-white photographs and art pieces on the wall lend the space an elegant atmosphere. A low cabinet by the window extends into a daybed, offering countless possibilities for daily life. As the moods of family members shift and the seasonal view through the window changes, this corner always offers the finest scenery.
The top floor is Ms. D’s private sanctuary. The original pitched roof traces elegant lines overhead, while dormer windows cut the sky into geometric shapes that cast shifting patterns of light across the walls as the sun moves.
The living room outside the master bedroom feels like a custom-made robe: the beige wool carpet muffles every footstep, a soft armchair envelops the body completely, and French doors open onto a small terrace overlooking the ceaseless sway of trees in the yard.
On the wall, a series of Ms. D’s travel photos are framed in slender metal—fragments of memory that lend an intimate warmth to the pure, minimalist space.
The bedding, sheer curtains, and plush carpet all follow a subtle gradation of tones, from pearl white to vanilla cream to pale gray, crafting a serene environment that feels both healing and deeply relaxing. A metal door, seamlessly integrated into the textured wall on both sides, separates the bathroom from the sleeping area. When opened, it reveals a quiet, pale lavender world within.
This space mirrors Ms. D’s inner world—blending feminine softness with modernist purity. Whenever worries weigh her down, she returns home to shed her armor and return to her softest, most authentic self.
