During the final year of my studies I was given an open brief for the design of a civic minded building, with the requirement for specific architectural and environmental responses. Firstly this involved collaboration from all eight members of the studio group to produce an in-depth site analysis for a central location in Bristol, I then developed my own detailed brief in response to the analysis. The design proposal was for a building which provided support for children with life limiting illnesses and their families. Making best use of the central urban location within close proximity to Bristol Royal Hospitals for Children, hence offering itself to more people than a traditional rural hospice. As a further requirement to the brief the project was detailed to PassivHaus standards, thus reducing the impact of the building’s operational energy and materials chosen were locally sourced. The building was also orientated on a north-south axis to prevent overheating and improve the overall environmental performance, aiding the integrated services.
