The theme of this project is the construction of a pair of houses for the two daughters of the owner of a plot
of 13,000 square meters situated at Ascona on the western slopes of Monte Verità.
The site enjoys a unique landscape value, being backed by a wood, with walls of sandstone rock and an
incomparable view of Lake Maggiore.
The two houses, one each intended for the two daughters, are constructed with two volumes which, although
separate, dialogue with each other, having the lake as their perspective, almost, as it were, creating a window
from the access road.
Internally, both houses are subdivided into a day area and a night area, by means of a change in level, which
apart from providing movement for the section, divides the spaces making them private and separate.
The visitor enters by way of a vestibule which leads to the space of the day area characterized by a dual level,
consisting of a kitchen that acts as a filter between the lounge and the dining area. Above the kitchen the
twofold level is occupied by a study/library overlooking the day area.
The night area instead consists of a bedroom with a wardrobe and a study, in their turn separated by a bathroom
which acts as an element of division between the two spaces. In the night area there is a stairway from the
study up to the library over the kitchen. The house also enjoys a covered terrace overlooking Lake Maggiore,
as do almost all the windows.
Making use of the different levels of the site it has been possible to arrange a space in common for the two
houses, below one of them, for use as a guest room with an independent bathroom and a small kitchenette.
One of the principal aims of the design was to enhance the view of the lake, while I have striven to create
also more intimate and introspective spaces within the houses.
