A House around a Chimney is a sauna constructed around a central brick chimney that is both spatial, structural and functional.
The solid brick chimney works as a central pillar and a space divider that bends in and out to fit the functions of the different rooms. Inside the sauna, a cut-out is made for the sauna unit. In the small rest area, the fireplace has a convex-shaped recess to fit a wood stove insert. In the outdoor area, the fireplace has the same-shaped concave addition to accommodate a larger fireplace.
The project was restricted by the Swedish permit-free regulation “Friggebodsregler.” This rule allows a permit-free building of less than 15 square meters and a maximum building height of 3 meters, provided it is placed on the same plot as an existing main building. Another permit-free regulation also allows a 15-square-meter canopy covering an outdoor area. We combined the two permit-free structures into an indoor/outdoor facility under a symmetrical hip roof resting on a single central chimney.
Both indoor and outdoor floors are made of the same limestone tiles. Indoor walls, ceilings, and fixed furniture are made from heat-treated aspen wood. The client wished for the house to be almost invisible from the main building, so it is painted dark brown and has a grass-covered roof, allowing it to blend into the surrounding vegetation.
