Perched on a cliff overlooking the sea, this residence has been re-imagined as a serene sanctuary amidst bamboo trees. Inspired by the family’s visits to Kyoto’s peaceful bamboo forests, the family of four sought a retreat that embodies the Eastern philosophy of mindfulness and simplicity. The brief called for a harmonious blend of earthy materials, subtle textures that reflect their love for nature and spiritual sensibilities.

Upon entering, a floor-to-ceiling shoe cabinet clad entirely in hand-glazed green ceramic tiles, reminiscent of the verdant hues of bamboo leaves, greets the eyes. As one eases into the living room, the artisan green tiles transition gracefully into the heart of the cabin, where they are inset into the wooden vertical struts along the display cabinetry that stretches across the length of the room.

Mimicking the gentle arch of bamboo canes, the defining feature of the sanctuary is its distinctively curved wooden roof, which fosters a sense of enclosure and protection. Spaced along the roof at regular intervals, a series of horizontal wooden slats conceal light tracks, creating a rhythmic flow. The custom tables and area rug echo the organic, sculptural forms of bamboo groves terrain.

A timber platform nestled within of the display cabinets gives rise to a wooden threshold that bridges the communal and private spaces. Understated architectural elements, such as wooden wall linings, cylindrical window mullions, and rounded moldings, are paired with cream bouclé fabric and lush green velvet upholstery to simulate a refined, cabin-like experience. Ambient cove lighting washes over the warm white plastered vaulted ceilings of the bedrooms and the study, creating alcoves that offer moments of quiet contemplation and personal retreat.

The result is a tactile haven that whispers tranquility, inviting its inhabitants to slow down and cultivate a deeper connection with their inner selves and nature.
