Itaewon
The land is located in a rich village along a ridge north of Itaewon. The corner site with a 6.3 meter level difference is exposed in all directions except the direction of the road, and a plan was needed to maximize the view, lighting, and ventilation while protecting the privacy of occupants. The steep slope was advantageous for calculating the surface, allowing the maximum height of the building and the underground area, while permanently providing views of the Seoul and Han River.
Taikaka House
Taikaka House is a work on whether occupants can acquire a different habitability from the past by experiencing synesthesia of nature in this space. Underground, areas that meet hotel amenities are organized toward the courtyard, and constant synesthesia experiences are generated through the overlapping of spaces and continuous reactions with users are induced. The ground was planned as a place where occupants could focus solely on their actions by removing efficiency from zoning and movement lines and adding the effectiveness of each space. It sought organic unity of residential spaces and at the same time tried to maximize the individuality of each place.
Physical properties
It was expected that occupants would respond to changes in Taikaka House and maintain continuous habitability by forming intimate empirical values. Interior and exterior finishes were designed to highlight the natural properties of materials.
The louver and interior surrounding the exterior of the house were finished with wood airlifted by dismantling the New Zealand giant old ship. Natural stone and metal were trimmed for a long time to implement the design intention, accompanied by works from Valentin Loellmann that reveal the properties and processes of material handling. Due to the materials and works being airlifted from each country, the entire process had to be constantly divided, and as a result, it took two years to complete. If there are textures in cities and nature that change with time, I hope Taikaka House has the same.
