A small 1920s cottage is transformed into a contemporary home featuring an open-plan living/dining/kitchen area and a master bedroom suite with cathedral ceilings. Located in a mature suburb at the end of a cul-de-sac, the original L-shaped house was enlarged from 1,700 sf to more than 2,300 sf, while increasing its footprint by less than 75 sf. The additional space was achieved by enclosing an existing screened-in porch and adding a fourth bedroom on the upper level.
Other elements of the redesign include a copper-roofed and natural timber front porch, leading to a new entrance with side lite; restoration of the board-and-batten siding and master bedroom porch overlooking the front yard. The open plan on the ground level connects the living room to the den, which opens to the dining area and kitchen. The U-shaped kitchen has a cantilevered bay window facing the back of the house. On the upper level, a fourth bedroom and extra half-bath were added, as well as the new primary bedroom with 14' tall ceilings and master bath.
