800SHOW
Creative Park, a 22,000sqm former steel factory in the heart of Jing?An
District, Shanghai, encompasses 15 buildings built over the span of 70 years.
These include the dominant 120m long factory hall with its ornate wooden
roof/beam structure, colonial-type villas dating back to the 1920-30s, and
office buildings built in the 1960-70s which are completely surrounded by a
blend of high-rises and local Shanghainese style Shikumen houses. Each building
was renovated with designs highlighting the individuality of original
construction and character.
The park was
renamed ?800SHOW?, a clever combination of the street number on Changde Road,
which happens to be a lucky Chinese number, and the Chinese character ??? (xiu4) in honor of the shows and performances the park
hosts. As an emblematic complex, this park can be identified as a ?place with
face?, a place for leisure and rest and a ?place with pause?. The architect?s
goal was to preserve as much of the existing structures as possible in order to
avoid waste and save on new materials and energy in the construction phase.
Sustainable design materials such as insulation, double glazed windows and sun
shades were also installed to decrease energy use.
The 120m event hall, colonial villas and
creative offices are seamlessly integrated into a new 24/7 mixed-usage Creative
Park landmark for Shanghai. Success lies in its? three key functions; creative
office spaces, multi-use event hall both serviced by the commercial ?Leisure
Plaza? with bars, restaurants and cafes. The event hall glass facade with
original wooden roof acts as the parks face along with the newly created
entrance plaza enticing the public to explore its? unique spaces. Located in
the heart of Shanghai?s commerce center Jing? An District with easy public
transport access by metro line seven and 5 minutes walk to metro line two and
the bustling commercial street Nanjing Xi Road.
Event Hall | a place with
a face
The
Shanghai People?s Electrical Machine Plant was revived thanks to a
transformation of the former 120m long production hall into the 800SHOW
multifunctional Event Hall. The former facade giving onto the street was
demolished and replaced by a massive, back set glass facade, creating a new
urban space, namely a prominent and inviting public entrance. The backset facade
and new public entrance space are key pieces of the design - not only
effectively interconnecting internal and external spaces but emphasizing a real
landmark for the downtown area. On the inside, the hall?s flexible stage,
refurbished cranes for equipment support, floor heating and an extensive
backstage area make the facility attractive for professional use for a wide
variety of events from car and fashion shows to musical or theatrical performances.
Leisure Plaza | a place with
pause
North of the event hall is the leisure plaza, this area
is directly accessible from Chang De Road yet withdrawn from the busy street.
Benefitting from its location, the plaza becomes a place for pause as it
encompasses a leisure area with trendy restaurants, cafes and bars. An ensemble
of three buildings frames the plaza: the former canteen, the former foundry and
an old villa, built in the 1920s. Renovation of these buildings was done with
due respect to their original character and correlatively modern elements were
integrated harmoniously. As a ?place with pause?, the open space of the leisure
plaza gives a calming atmosphere for workers to chat, relax and recuperate from
a hard day?s work. It also serves the event hall as catering and service
facility.
Creative Offices| facilitating
collaboration
Southeast
of the event hall is the creative offices area perfectly tailored for the
booming creative industry and complimented by the roof-top gardens that give
views of the surrounding courtyards, blending with the traditional life of
Shanghai. The combination of modern office building, galleries and old
Shanghai-style housing makes the space both attractive and functional, while
preserving the atmosphere.
