Kfardebian 4752utilizes environmentally
responsible and sustainable design and displays the architect’s (SOMA)
signature concept of a double skin. The structure’s inner skin, or wall, is
constructed from raw stone excavated on site. The outer skin, or distinctive
louvers, holds down a functional duel role: aesthetics and protection. Forming
a striking alternative to wood, the louvers themselves have been designed from
high-tech material: ceramic.
The ceramic louvers have been designed elliptically
and with privacy in mind. The wafer-like width of the louvers in conjunction
with their depth helps maximize outward views from the property.
Simultaneously, the very depths of the louvers maximize privacy as they prevent
unwanted inward gazes from street level and beyond. The louvers are also set in
a rather cool and unique barcode pattern, which increases or decreases in
density accordingly and depending upon where the louvers are located on the
property. Bathroom windows, for example,
display a denser pattern than living room windows.
The choice of ceramic louvers ensures their longevity.
Unlike wood counterparts, the louvers require zero maintenance and are
non-reactive to the temperature extremes found in mountain regions. But it is not just about aesthetics. The
design of the second skin also takes into consideration the properties primary
use as second homes. The louvers, therefore, have been devised as more than
decorative additions and act as security operatives too. An unfussy bi fold and
raising mechanism permits the louvers to be closed in order to seal and protect
the property against security incursions.
Each property has a wrap-around elevated and
landscaped garden. In between the properties the gardens create an
English-style courtyard. Their exaggerated height prevents street-level
accessibility and creates a protected park-like, yet fenceless environment in
which children can safely be entertained. The elevation has further benefits
too. It also maximizes soundproofing and physical and visual privacy for all of
the property’s residents.
