The client approached their new home as an opportunity to design and build a new lifestyle that would significantly decrease their impact on the world. They began reshaping their mobility, their diets, their daily energy use, and even their rate of spending and consumption.
Their home now stands as a constant supporter of their new lifestyle. The site was chosen close to mass transit and major community services. It’s designed so both of them can work from home comfortably. The main level will allow them to gracefully age without having to move or even remodel. The kitchen is laid out to promote a better diet. Storage is designed to decrease waste and over-consumption. And, of course, the shell, lighting, and heating and cooling systems are designed to be the most energy efficient possible.
The house passed the state energy code by over 35% and, while their home is bigger than their last, the energy bill is less than half. The client, a long time user of allergy meds, is now drug free thanks to the home’s heat recovery ventilation and filtration system. And, the house scored a 97 on the LEED for Homes checklist giving it a Platinum rating.
