56KSR sits within the Joo Chiat Conservation Area. Surrounded by quaint rows of shophouses and landed homes in one of the oldest parts of Singapore. The area has long been known for its deep roots and community spirit, boasting a rich history that has spanned generations.
The owner is a strong supporter of the local conservation movement with a keen eye for design had acquired two properties in order to create his family home. Family, preservation and tasteful modernization would be meaningful themes that defined the spirit of the 56KSR project.
The new house joined two properties. First, a ground level unit occupying the corner that was once home to the neighbourhood store - affectionately known as a corner shop. The second an upper level unit, previously the residence that sat atop the store. The 2nd-storey residence was accessible through a concealed ground level staircase, which separated the store from the row of adjoining shophouses.
The design approach used for 56KSR was simple: merge sustainable design with meticulous conservation techniques. Many of the steps taken act to preserve and restore the splendour of the classic shophouse aesthetic and spirit, honouring the proud art-deco tradition. Yet there was also mindful integration of contemporary green design methodology – enhancing key aspects of the revamped home.
For 56KSR, original materials were sourced and utilised where possible. The final colour schemes and finishes represent the design team’s best effort to both accentuate the traditional elements of the design, or replicate the spatial feel of the original. 56KSR was a project that sought to conserve a cherished piece of Singaporean history, yet allowing the new home to be enjoyed and experienced in a contemporary fashion.
The final design is an honest refurbishment that pays tribute to the spirit of this storied community. The former corner shop and residence would undoubtedly have been an indelible part of the fabric of the old neighbourhood. Today in its place
sits a revitalized family home. 56KSR melds meticulous restoration with contemporary essentials, as classic shophouse spaces are reimagined to suit modern perceptions of community, family and home.
