Cantilevered over a hill and
facing the San Francisco Bay, this small house was designed in 1950 by Wally
Reemeling. Its recent renovation began by filling in the existing carport to
create two bedrooms, a bathroom, laundry room, study and new hallway.
Additionally, the kitchen was renovated, the living room extended, an entry
court created, windows and doors replaced, a forced air heating system
installed, and a new carport and storage area built. Reemling’s original
attempt to passively cool the home was hindered by an uninsulated roof.
However, the new windows have enhanced the original goal of passive cooling by
drawing cool western air through the kitchen, then exiting through louvers above
the fixed sloping glass windows of the living room.
