5 Blocks House.Gulluk Mevkii Mugla/TurkeyPENarchitects,2010.Project Team:Yigit KaleBahadir ErsozogluConversion of 5 concrete pipe blocks into a private residential unit for a writer and journalist couple. The site is located in Gulluk, a rural countryside close to the city of Mugla. "Non-urban" conditions on site brought infrastructural and accessibility concerns at the initial design step, along with the cost of logistics, left a quite limited budget for the design. So that PENarchitects proposed prefabrication and the idea of using concrete pipes that is commonly available in Izmir, the closest major town with qualified industry. The plan scheme is created with the aim of exploring the potentials of using the same module. This is achieved by staggering and spreading apart the concrete tubes in order to provide enough space for outdoor activities.Fixed furniture systems on both sides of the each module creates a regular inner form and a convenient living space that satisfies the storage needs of the user. As well, they are incorporated with concealed lighting systems at the top that emphasize the dynamic nature of the living area.
