ATHIS MONS - Avenue du 18 avril 1944, The challenge was how to respond to two very different environments on opposing sides of the site.
STREET-side - this high-density apartment building is treated as a group of townhouses, their scale and rhythm inspired by NY brownstones, fitting harmoniously into the neighborhood of low density houses.
GARDEN-side - it appears as a continuous block with small “attic houses”- responding the environment of postwar slabs.
Between front and back, within the thickness of the building, colorful canyons of light carve out the building opening it up to light, air and nature.
Underneath, the collective areas are generously dimensioned, opened to air and gardens as a positive response to the river overflow regulations.
This project received an EAE#3 prize for "Housing and Urban Forms" as well as a BATEX (BATiment EXemplaire) for Accessibility by the Ministry of Ecology and Sustainable Development in France.
