Gasteiz / Vitoria, Spain

Project Featured on Sep 03, 2013
YEAR
2011
Photography: César San Millán
Architectural Technologist: José Ramón Hurtado Mendoza
Developer: Homeowners’ association
Building company: Nasipa S.L.
Surface: 368,70 m2

The plot is located at the historic centre of Vitoria-Gasteiz, near to Santa María Cathedral, at the corner of this “Canton” and Txikita Street. The project is made by petition of the homeowners’ association.

The original building, and unclassified 19th century building, is demolished because of its state of ruin. The ordinance of new construction defines in an exhaustive way the standards of the new shape, that requires the reduction of its occupation to leave available the continuity of its inside pipe. Thus, the new building is separated from the bowling alley located at the high part of the Cantón of Santa María.

The design of the building obeys to the discretion and respect that the surroundings deserve, especially regarding to Santa María Cathedral. This Cantón was an entrance for the Way of Saint James to the Cathedral and pretends to introduce an architectural style with no ornaments, with no additional shapes, a façade with simple and equal shapes, always avoiding the imitation of the past and with a forced intention of contemporaneity.

The building is outlined as a trapezoidal prism with a gable roof, flat facades with no flights, and just an only vertical gap framed with corten steel and a lined up glass handrail, forming a neutral and simple façade in two materials, an external continued cladding with isolation and corten steel for the protection of plinths, main entrance and gaps.

At the inside we can find four little dwellings, each of them with double orientation; three dwellings with one bedroom and a duplex with two bedrooms at the second floor with habitable garrets.
