The design directive for this private retreat on the rugged Oregon Coast was simple: literally embrace the elements. Nestled above the beach, at the edge of a forest, the site is ruled by an evocative coastal landscape and climate. The designers pared away the external architecture, leaving a thick slab of grassy coast floating above glass walls. From behind this glass sheath, the owners and their guests can engage with the daily spectacle of the Pacific Northwest Coast as it unfurls all around, through and over the house.
A central anchor on the main level pulls kitchen appliances, general storage, and a bathroom to the core, freeing exterior walls from obstruction. Unimpeded views to the ocean, beach, sky and forest saturate all living spaces. Sea air flows freely into the space through a split in the glass wall between the dining and living areas where wide sliding doors also open to a spacious sheltered deck. A floating white oak staircase descends to sleeping quarters and a lounge. As on the main level, these spaces boldly face the ocean and are immersed in their surroundings. Motorized shades, low basalt retaining walls, and native landscaping offer a sense of seclusion.
With the view as the focus of the home, other material elements are designed to recede. Dark stone floors, meticulously-detailed wood ceilings and paneling, and low profile furniture provide an intimate and inviting backdrop for guests, while also subtly introducing elements of the coastal environment into the living space.
During the day, regardless of the weather conditions, the coastal sky seems to fill the space. At night, the roles are reversed, as down lights in the house illuminate its small stretch of beach.
