This residence for an artist, an art collector and their two children, combined two apartments into a single loft-like space that highlights their collection of post-minimalist art. A continuous wood ribbon connects the various living spaces, transitioning from a full height bookshelf, to an art and book display wall, to a media center. The kitchen is wrapped in bamboo panels and cabinetry that conceal doors into a private artist’s studio and office. Walls around existing structure were removed and the columns left exposed, revealing the original steelwork of the pre-war apartment building. In contrast to the public spaces, which are defined by light woods, bamboo and dark stone, the children’s area are defined by brightly colored ceramics and millwork, including a custom patterned climbing wall. The gut renovation included all new mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems, as well as work on the Landmark facade
