Set against the vibrant urban backdrop of Jakarta on 20-29 October 2023, 301BOTANIKA is a part of the National Cultural Week program held by the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education. The annual program features various spaces spread across the city to embody the concept of 'Ruang Tamu' (Living room), a space managed by an artistic and cultural community that serves as a platform to exhibit diverse works from various artists' residency programs while also serving as an interactive space for the public and collaborators through events such as exhibitions, feasts, and workshops. This was the starting point for the installation designed by SB301 Office.
The 'Ruang Tamu' concept unfolds as a dynamic space designed for the ritual of sharing through education, appreciation, and creative processes. Elevating this concept to a broader urban scale entails a recontextualization that embraces temporality and intervention, strategically extending its influence within and around public infrastructure to activate communal engagement. The selection of BNI City Station is intentional, capitalizing on its vibrant ambiance nestled in the heart of Jakarta. Surrounded by towering offices and residential buildings, this bustling transportation hub experiences a surge of activity during peak hours. This station also serves as a crucial gateway for visitors arriving from the airport to immerse themselves in the vibrant energy of Jakarta.
The result is a temporal installation work that acts as a botanical living space. Purposefully intervening in the transitional area at the station's entrance, this installation is built to serve as a living sanctuary for humans and plants. Within 301BOTANIKA, the botanical realm assumes the role of the 'hosts,' extending a gracious welcome. At the same time, humans embrace the part of 'guests,' fostering a harmonious and reciprocal exchange of hosting and being hosted.
The selection of ring-lock scaffolding as the primary construction material stems from its rapid assembly capabilities, requiring less manpower, and offering a cost-effective solution. Metal planks serve as the flooring, allowing the play of light from below to permeate the space. To meet the plants' sunlight needs and contribute to the artistic ambiance, 35 fluorescent grow lights are strategically installed, casting the iconic magenta hue that defines the installation's atmosphere. Spatial separation is achieved by installing plastic curtains, serving as dividers, and maintaining visual access to the surrounding scenery. Atop the structure, repurposed gutters act as large containers for Lee Kwan Yew plants while discreetly concealing the electrical system and components integrated into the installation.
Beyond the installation, 301BOTANIKA introduces diverse activation programs featuring engaging workshops on grafting processes and hands-on plant harvesting sessions. Visitors are afforded a unique opportunity to directly harvest and savor various grape varieties flourishing within 301BOTANIKA. Adding to the experience, barter market sessions invite visitors to actively participate, with grapes as a trading currency for exchanging goods and personal stories.
