3 Desert Way is a desert shelter designed and built by Trevor Pan at the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture. This unique master degree program provides opportunity for willing apprentices to design, build and live in their own space - essentially, it's a dorm room without power. There is a locker room very close by to store your clothes, etc. and the beautiful drafting room at Taliesin West to store your computer, etc. This project was a labor of love lasting over two years. I personally constructed all the forms, poured the concrete bag by bag with a one bag mixer. This allowed only a trail from a nearby road. The Taliesin West property is just shy of 500 acres and there is plenty of space for the shelters. I believe there are about 18 of them now.In addition to the concrete, I placed the blue glass tiles - indentils. I cut the wood to size, made all the window's, essentially, it is a total work by me. Sure an occasional friend put in a helping hand but there were no crews. I made all the welds, cut the glass and only with the Sunbrella fabric did I have real assistance by Nick King, the school librarian's spouse. What's wonderful is that I was able to live in it for about 14 months!
