The objective of this tender was to find a concept for a museum dedicated to the 2nd World War, a building which would be a new identifiable landmark in the city of Gdansk. The tender also proposes a landscaping project for the immediate surrounding area. The proposal that Ideias do Futuro presented included the creation of a unique, iconic structure which glorifies the historical importance of the city, the location where the conflict began. The museum buildings by definition have the purpose of collecting, preserving, researching and emphasising History and a collective memory to ensure the perpetuation of knowledge. Just as a museum preserves a memory, amber, an important local element, also preserves species in time. Amber is a capsule which contains memories, just as the museum proposes to do.Therefore, the building is created on the relationship with amber and the preservation of knowledge. Amber is the surrounding "skin" which defines the entrance and which surrounds a metallic box containing the memories to be kept. This box seems to be suspended and represents the folded metal which relates to the use of this material during the war and in the industrial context of the area. The material selected to surround the metallic box is insulating glass with a capillary structure, an excellent thermal insulation which also diffuses natural light. This material is supported by a metallic structure. The box is made in galvanised steel, made in a way which creates an inclination which suggests a subtle movement of the facade.
