FME’s scope of work involved the rehabilitation of an existing warehouse and a new building on the adjacent site, resulting in a six-story, 283,600SF corporate office building. To respond to the scale of the adjacent buildings, the Second Street elevation is intentionally broken down into three separate elements. The first is a brick building that contains the existing concrete warehouse. The second is a new brick building that is set back from Second Street with an adjacent park, and the third is the glass atrium that links the two buildings. The atrium contains a rectilinear staircase that runs through the entire building as a pedestrian thoroughfare, acting as both a vertical conduit and a horizontal intermediary.
