A house for two artists: a sculptor whose sense of sight is failing, and a jazz musician whose hearing is failing. The site: a plain cleared of trees and ivy with the intent to build more condos- an intention that appears to have been abandoned. The house is meant as a framework - a plan or path that will ease the artists into their new lives and allow them to exchange their trades with each other and students - a framework for the forest canopy to return to the area. The live/work unit functions as a linear path, with the bedroom facing the morning sun so the warmth of light will wake the artists. A bathroom is located between the bedrooms and studios - a translucent box from which light emanates when in use. water drips along the shower walls when the bathroom is in use, providing an acoustic signal that the room is in use.The "work" area features a large studio for both artists, as well as a kitchen and dining area. One side of the building is open to views of the surrounding forest. To encourage regrowth in the area, a massive copper framework covers the house, creating pockets of space for solitude around the house. Being so close to the ocean, the copper is intended to gain a bright patina, as well as a lively covering of ivy, which is abundant in the area. The ivy-covered building will hopefully spur the percieved advance of the forest into the plain.
