The project was designed from a communal perception of Kiryat Ono and a desire to strengthen the connections between different populations in the city, strengthening the sense of belonging to the place and strengthening the visual identity of the city. Therefore, apart from planning the entrances individually, they were designed as a wide area of a peripheral urban promenade that is branded as 10K LOOP, a 10 kilometers long, which is a quarter of a marathon.
Along the route of the loop are the planned entrances to the city as well as parks and historical sites that tell the story of Kiryat Ono and strengthen the user’s sense of belonging to the city. The route is accessible to all the neighborhoods of the city, and thus resonates with the idea of Kiryat Ono's urban community and identity throughout its length, and not only in a specific manner at the planned entry points to the city.
The promenade is characterized by a unique design language that includes varied and colorful vegetation, a physical separation between pedestrians and runners and cyclists, separation from the roads, unique treatment of pavements, pergolas and special street furniture.
The project also deals with the harsh acoustic walls along the promenade: replacing the walls to transparent acoustic walls where it possible and walls in places that are more rigid front can be treated by climbing vegetation and pergolas that create a pleasant place along the promenade.
Each of the four entrances to the city combined along the promenade was designed according to its location in the city and the social and physical context in its surroundings. It includes a program that creates a meeting place for communities in the area: leisure and weekly market area, a city square, an amphitheater and a compound that incorporates a climbing wall. Thus, every entry becomes a place of importance in the municipal experience in Kiryat Ono and does not remain a cosmetic point that passed unnoticed.
Dori entrance - 10k loop market
The Dori entrance was designed as a leisure complex with wide pergolas that can accommodate various functions such as cafes, restaurants, shops, library, workshops, and more. In addition, a weekly market can be set between the pergolas.
The complex is located near residential buildings as well as several public buildings that appeal to different populations in the city: Ono Academic College, the Golden Age House and kindergartens. Therefore, apart from the impressive visibility created by the pergolas towards the entrance of the city, the complex will serve as a meeting place for the local communities, and on the days when the market is held - a meeting between all the residents of the city.
Ben-Gurion Entrance - 10 K Loop Amphitheater
According to the land designation plan, the entrance to the Ben-Gurion area is intended to accommodate employment and office functions alongside existing residential buildings. The entrance planning offers an open amphitheater for the benefit of the public and for the welfare of the employees in the future site. The Amphitheater will provide workers with an outdoor space to go out during a working day to eat lunch, hold meetings, and collaborate with offices, professional conferences and cultural days. In fact, the planned complex will enable the integration of workers in the city and their meeting with the local community instead of meeting in offices throughout the day. For the city's residents, the amphitheater provides a spacious space that can accommodate shows, open spaces, urban conferences and more.
The tribunes in the Amphitheater are wider than the usual standard, allowing the planting of plants and shady trees. Thus, on the one hand, the space enables a multi-participant urban experience and on the other hand an informal and pleasant place to stay around the clock.
Katzir entrance - 10K Loop Square
The Katzir entrance is located in a traffic interchange that is very unfriendly to pedestrians. The planning at this point seeks to take advantage of the large and desolate plaza that covers Highway 471, which is accessible to pedestrians and serves as an urban square that creates a pleasant and human connection between Kiryat Ono and its neighbor to the north and Bar Ilan University on the other side of the intersection.
The planned square includes pavement treatment, benches and pergolas in a design language that connects it to the planned promenade on the other side of the road. At this point of the entrance area, the promenade was designed in the place where the road now curves on Yigal Allon Street. The plan proposes canceling this section of the road because it is not necessary to reach the residential buildings. In the forecourt area, the promanade will gradually rise to an elevated level that will enable the passers-by to look at the planned square, instead of a and unpleasant walk alongside the acoustic wall.
Levi Eshkol Entry - 10K Loop Climbing Wall
The Levi Eshkol entry area is located between an existing residential neighborhood and a new area in which a country club and a building for the youth of Kiryat Ono are being built. The environment will contain a young and sporty spirit, and the project therefore offers a scenic area that combines a climbing wall, as well as sports facilities for the benefit of runners and trainees at the Loop promenade..
The route of the promenade in this area comes from the country club area, the youth center and the Science Park, passes through the entrance complex and continues westward to a natural scenic area, enabling walking, running and cycling in nature.
