New ‘RIG’ Workout Concept
Inspired by Tokyo Streets for a Post-Pandemic Era
Hammersmith, London
Based in Hammersmith APA have closely worked with 1REBEL on their first collaborative design project. The space is entitled ‘RIG’. Previously 1REBEL spaces have explored a ‘night club’ feel but the need for a pivot came with the pandemic. Born out of trying to create a greater sense of team and community within the work out, the design of the new studio reflects this with its open plan structure. This new breed of 1Rebel spaces is planned in neighborhood locations, so this new club is local, close to residential streets.
The space and design have moved deeper backstage. More raw, more transitory, more dramatic. A work in progress. The new ‘on site’ feel is ephemeral with room for change. Impermanence adopted as a state of mind. A movable frame encloses the workout zone, but the space also bleeds out from it with abstract scaffold baton lighting. A blend of textures, materials, light and darkness, speed and movement, neon signs and message boards, define a very dynamic, ever-changing space, inspired by Tokyo streets.
With RIG, the idea was to capture some aspect from a rush of adrenalin, a raw emotion. A space to encourage, feel and accept a flow of endorphins post exertion. To put stamina to the ultimate test. Can a space encourage a feeling? Sure. Can rawness in urban material and with artificial light induce our instinct to amplify our efforts for change? Perhaps. It surely does in nature. What about for man-made space? Doubtful. Why? How? What does an increase in serotonin and norepinephrine even look like?
No answers, but a scaffold rig and re-utilized steel stair, changing cabins and showers made in brittle polycarbonate, lots of utilitarian lighting, flickering to excite or agitate an energy flow. It seeks to grab that post Pandemic innate desire for music, movement, dance, raw spirit and then it kicks it right back at you. The change zone has the same attitude as the workout, unremitting. Humble yet industrial and hard, often basic materials proliferate. The space however is fluid and hopefully warm. Concrete textured like butter, glowing Perspex, crown cut timber swirls, a new cantilevered polycarbonate box, and stainless steel profile cladding with machined finish and rivets, as if some Tokyo bound HGV about to take flight is a shower cabin.
RIG has been designed impermanently to allow the users to adopt it and shape it at the same time as rethinking and remoulding themselves in a new, raw world.
Co-founder of 1Rebel, James Balfour commented:
“We’re extremely proud to add RIG to the 1Rebel roster of workouts. As a brand we're constantly looking at how to innovate and provide our customers with the very best in fitness, and we believe RIG is up there alongside Reshape, Ride and Rumble. This community focused concept is designed to champion your strength, while challenging you and pushing your limits. This is our first venture away from central London, but we know the appetite is there, especially as we can see life returning to normality and people putting their health above anything else."
