A custom piece of art, the backlit onyx wall panels at 150 Elgin Street have varying levels of translucency and natural veining to create an inviting entry to the building interior.
Within the main lobby of this 21-story office complex, the designers at NEUF Architect(e)s and ownership at Morguard Investments imagined a glowing onyx wall to dazzle visitors and tenants. Intended to bring an organic texture to the crisp white gallery-like space, the surface possibilities for the onyx wall were left open to the imagination.
Throughout the stone selection process, the team scoured the world for translucent stones with expressive movement and range of color to meet the design intent. Petri Onyx was selected for its fluid patterning. The onyx slabs were precisely mapped to create the striking layout and emotional movement found throughout the illuminated feature wall.
After all onyx panels were installed, each panel was individually analyzed for translucency levels and the lighting brightness was adjusted. This brought a harmonious level of illumination across the entire wall. A theatrical lighting controller offers predetermined lighting scenes which can be accessed and implemented directly from an iPhone or iPad app.
Pattern, texture, color, and light converge in a delightful expression of organic movement.
